(2022’09’17’S: Prompt 7/8*) WORDLE SPOILER ALERT! On a Shawmont Eva run, Desi and Boltcutter got us thinking about Wordle. It promptly became the topic of the nonce, tempered by a healthy dose of CtCloser. The fact that the most recent ‘REALLY?!’ answer was PARER, got me going on about what constitutes cheating.
Is it cheating to use success-improving strategies? Sharing your anonymized results was the source of one writer addressing the question of unfair advantages. Other internet writers have commented about the fact that Wordle has 2,309 words on its official list out of 20,000 5-letter words in the English language. Once you’ve played a little, you discover that plurals ending in S aren’t in the list. Words using the same letter 2x (or even 3), are. Is it cheating that I know my starting words aren’t on the list of words already used? The lists are out there to know. Would it have been cheating to know that 3 of my attempts to guess PARER—PACER, PAGER, PAVER—weren’t even on the official list? (OF COURSE, I didn’t check beforehand, but PACER, REALLY?!)
All of my going on was too much for Desi. ‘It’s supposed to be fun!’ Me, working too hard by over-analyzing? Well, I think using words like PARER is cheating and definitely NOT fun.
