Wife and I were visiting Boy in Denver where he’s working as a satellite engineer. The morning running plan last Wednesday was to shoot over to Sloan’s Lake and maybe add on.
Sloan’s Lake features a 2.7-mile loop around and a 1.7-mile one-way effort from Boy’s place. For the Growler in Jenkintown, think of a version of the Alverthorpe Park run with its 1.5 one-way over and 1.7-mile loop. The difference is that Sloan’s Lake is public while Alverthorpe Park is public, too; just not to anyone who’s not an Abington Township resident.
It’s called Sloan’s Lake, versus Sloan Lake, because Sloan didn’t discover it: He actually made it. The account goes that he drilled a well one day and found a lake the next. Aquifers pressurized by surrounding mountains can do that. That’s what the sign around it says, at least. Wikipedia says differently. As the largest lake in Colorado, it’s unique either way.
“Add on” featured a significant part of a local public art walk which turned my 6 miler into a satisfying 8 miler.
What was the effect of being in the Mile-high City with its thinner atmosphere? Sure, it seemed tiring, but the pace according to Map My Run provides the evidence: 12:13 min/mi vs. 11:21, 5 weeks before.
Still, I got to explore a new place at my favorite speed: running.
