I’m not a real roller.
Everyone uses rollers and massagers for a variety of reasons. I hear Shawmont runners talk about the practice regularly. I don’t roll for one reason: I prioritize differently. >cough< lazy >cough<
A few years ago, I decided to prioritize toe touches. Easy, right? Not for me. I started using a simple stretch and finally achieved my goal. It got me wondering about another degree of flexibility. I wondered it I could get to touching my forehead to my knees.
Keeping at the stretching led me to discover a nerve pain that I didn’t know was a thing. A left upper-thigh pain materialized that only occurred when I was doing that particular stretch, to that particular degree. A quick search returned meralgia paresthetica as the precise diagnosis. But the treatment made little sense (My family wouldn’t even let me wear tight clothing!).
Enter rolling. Wife had bought me a leg roller years ago that I never used: Gaiam Restore Dual-Sided Leg Massager. Rolling out the area of my thigh where the pain occurred was the solution. After using it for a few weeks, the pain dissipated and I’ve been able to continue with my latest head-to-knee priority. And I stopped rolling.
I got other things I devote my time to.
