Run Report – Notes from the Fields, Moving and Eating (#356: 2026’06’03’W)

About activity, runners, and many words

[2 MIN READ]

The run featured 3 notable individuals: Conor, Kevin, and Rita. We were pleased to have Kevin join us after being absent since April … of 2025, but who’s counting (PIC [Facebook])? Aside from me.

As for Conor and Rita, they had the distinction of being club sophomores, Conor from January (of this year) and Rita from May (this month, 2 weeks ago [iCandybyWangC.com and elsewhere unless otherwise specified]). Relative to last week’s rain out, Kevin recalled another one when he and I both took the chance to show up, despite the chance of rain, and ended up being the sole two that actually did … show up and run.

We decided to do the SMH (Smack My Head, the Submarine / Murder Hill Route). Kevin reflected on both the hill and his year of absence with a quip: “I miss you guys. I don’t miss this.”

Rita patiently abided my, uh, running commentary about the route, which is full of its own history and club significance. I like to give people context to help them appreciate as much about the club and its crew as possible, but I have been accused of using many words when I talk in general. If the words were too many for Rita this time, she didn’t complain.

I wanted to opt for The Pizza Wheel for the overrun, but the store didn’t opt for us—or any other customers—because they had to close punctually (8:00 p.m.). That made Human Robot the hangout space. Seven of us loitered there as we introduced the club sophomores to that weekly routine for their first time, both. There were a lot of words about the routine, but not all from me at least.

There were a bunch of words about the possibility of forming a JRC Growlers 2027 Broad Street Run team. Heads up for those who can be motivated to join that team: Winter running with the Growlers will anchor a great training routine. Stay tuned.

Among the words I did use, most were with Conor as I got to know him. He rose to the height of notariety as we discovered that he was acquainted with my son, having graduated with him from Abington High School. (I already knew that about Terp Adam from a few years ago.) Conor even shared an episode he remembered from running in the same 6th-grade circle together when he and my boy were in the same summer tech camp. That’s a preexisting 3rd-degree of connection that we were able to identify. Many words aren’t always problematic.

Run, overrun, past run, and even future run, duly noted.
