A Pain in the… (#208: ZY Weekly Newsletter 1/10/26)

The rear end was the one safe place

[1½ MIN READ]

I mentioned 2 left-ankle sprains this past training cycle before Philadelphia Marathon (11’23’Sunday): Lessons from a Sprained Ankle II (ShawmontRunningClub.com). That was as of September. I never bothered to mention the 2 additional sprains (reinjuries?). I was fully recovered by race time.

Aside from the number of times one can sprain the same joint, there’s the number of joints one can sprain. Also during the marathon-training season, I managed to sprain my right pinkie. Yes, while running. It seems I was doing an evening Black Men Run outing that went past a construction zone in University Park (“Run Report”: Facebook). Where the sidewalk was crushed down across the driveway, I went astaggering and threw my hand up to catch my balance. Where pinkie and chain-link fence meet, guess which one wins? The pinkie is still either not fully recovered or is now arthritic.

Then there’s the number of ways one can sprain a joint. This last one was neither during race training nor even running. It seems I was about to turn away from the bedroom mirror. I shifted my weight and felt something give at the bend of my right instep. I had not even begun actually moving. Did you know you can sprain the 3rd toe-foot joint independent of all the others? Three weeks later, the podiatrist decided a steroid shot was in order to tamp down the lingering swelling and pain.

KayCee had her own run-in with the podiatrist who told her to rest: “Then I just got sad and depressed, and if I couldn’t run, I didn’t want to look at Strava to see what I was missing.” When she finally did, she noticed that I wasn’t running either. Thanks for reaching out, KayCee.

Winter’s usual spring-marathon training is now done before even starting. I wondered aloud to Podiatrist if the last training and race could have fatigued my joints enough to permit this fascinating new injury. No, she said, “Sometimes things just happen.”
