Rob and Michele Singer Reiner’s murders had just taken place the day before last week’s run. I didn’t know anything about the family until I read the New York Times article about its youngest daughter’s reaction to the murders. Getting ready for the GGR last week, I was thinking about another family member’s undocumented reaction to the death of parents and involvement of sibling, which was much closer to home (iCandybyWangC.com).
That isn’t what I articulated when I suggested the Submarine/Murder Hill route in honor of Rob Reiner’s family. To a person, every Growler reacted as if I was making the suggestion in bad taste. Fine, I own that. We don’t normally do the SMH route during winter months anyway because the lighting isn’t the best, but Jay-var articulated all the good reasons why we should do it: and so we did.

Ending the year with this Cerebrun (writing ‘vacation’ next week), leaves me reflecting on the passings of my mother-in-law and mothers of other friends in a different-but-equally-important social circle. My own mother died in 2018. I close with the sober recommendation that others have made after tragedies big and small: Hold the ones you love close. Who knows how many other opportunities there will be?
