The Journey to Longer Running (#307: 2025’05’07’W)

It happens step by step

[1 MIN READ]

GGR was well represented at Broad Street Run, 05’04’U (Sunday), with 6 regular runners: Aaron, Grace, J’Adam, Jim, Kevin, and Scott. That was without even registering as a club. What was exciting was that four of them ran their biggest distance with BSR’s 10 miles. I don’t know how much of that was them hanging out with the Growlers and getting the distance bug by osmosis, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was. When you consistently rub shoulders with people doing amazing things, you start to wonder about yourself doing the same.

The next common race increment before 10 miles is the 5K. At 3.1 miles, that’s a 223% jump to 10 miles and a huge accomplishment in its own right. However, we also have several runners in the club who run marathons. Sure, it’s a lot of training to get there, but at 26.2 miles, that’s only a 162% jump from BSR. One great incentive is Shawmont Running Club with its setting and distances in and around Fairmount Park. More than a few Growlers have used that club to help with long-distance build up.

We might need a few more BSR’s and a couple half marathons to reach that point, if we ever get there at all; but if it happens, there will be a lot of folks to build with. Next stop: The Growlers Group Run Marathon Team. I’m lovin’ it!
