Sure, it’s cold for us, but with average global warming that means somewhere else is frying. Okay, fine, you say. I’ll take some of that right now, you say. Especially with so many days of Really cold, you say: I’m staying inside. I’m telling you that you still need to expend energy for sanity reasons.
Some folks will do that energy expending by running on a treadmill or elliptical. Others will do cross training through weight work or swimming. All good.
For me those options either require expenses I’m unwilling to make, i.e., membership fees or equipment purchases, or effort I’m willing to exert, e.g., acquiring memberships or extra equipment. I’m cheap and lazy. I run for a reason, like the manageable cost and ease of entry. A pair of decent running shoes and some moisture-wicking clothes et voilà.
So then what does a cheap and lazy person do for super-cold weather running? Those Canadians have given this some thought: Exercising Outdoors in Canada: What the Research Tells Us About Exercising Safely and Effectively in Extreme Cold. Yes, that article has a lot of words and a lot of numbers; so, I summarize: layer with something moisture wicking to keep liquid sweat away from your skin.
What that article doesn’t tell you is how a Growlers Group Run helps with cold-weather running. I summarize: A mere 30 minutes or so and a warm starting and ending station at Jenkintown Running Company. And finally, the social warmth of good conversation in good community. Cold-weather energy expenditure that isn’t that insane.
