Running Glasses (#256: 2024’05’08’W)

The drinking kind

[1½ MIN READ]

I wear contact lenses when I run (unless I forget to reorder), but other Growlers wear glasses year around. Those glasses are vital, but so are the kind we drink our post-run beers from.

We can always drink from the quintessential, red plastic Solo cups and we did for many years; but Jenkintown Running Company has also had beer tumblers on display from various running sources. So one day, JRC manager Keith suggested we use them. Admittedly they are pretty glas…, that is, classy for a classy running club. He even suggested storing them on a display shelf that we could use for that expressed purpose: So that’s where you can find them.

At the end of the usual weekly run, we pull them down, fill them up, and then drain them. Then we tromp into the back work area like we own the place to get our dishwashing supplies for cleaning.

I suppose it makes quite the sight to have someone using the washroom with the door wide open. It makes more of a sight to have a few runners spilling out as each contributes to the cleaning process. Personally, I’ve gone in a few times and had to say to the others, “Do you mind? I’m in here!”, but that hasn’t seemed to discourage anyone. This strikes me as the epitome of inconsideration, but the Growlers Group Run is a drinking club with a running problem, so post-libation discretion seems not to be the modus operandi.

Getting back to the glasses themselves, anyone can see them, but they are not for sale and you can’t just go around the store using them for their intended purpose. Come to think of it, it’s kind of peculiar that the club members can even go around the store using them that way. At least we’ve never tried to use them while we are doing the running that’s featured in the names of both the store and the club. They’re not those kinds of glasses.
