Running Clubs in the News (#137: ZY Weekly Newsletter 9/30/23)

Figuring out what we’ve long known

[1½ MIN READ]

Last Newsletter (9/23/23), Teddio shared an NYT article (The Rise of Run Clubs) about entire clubs that meet at various races; in that case, Berlin. By now Just Gene, Just Hilary, and Pat M have represented Shawmont Running Club in Berlin and we should all be able to scroll down to the ‘Congrats-A-Mundo to All’ section to see how they did (09’24’Sunday. They’ve been listed in the Whoz Doing Whut section of this illustrious publication for several months.).

We’ll have to ask if they celebrated the way that particular journalist described runners doing in their article. I myself wouldn’t recommend going so far: Dancing? Before the race? Who would really want to risk spraining an ankle? It’s not the kind of behavior I would imagine our club representatives engaging in, but, again, we’ll have to ask them.

I did appreciate the reported zeal (and deep pockets, presumably) of the runners’ groupies: “Today, the clubs are supporting their racing members on route sidelines as rowdy as American tailgates… These clubs help people build communities in cities that can feel alienating.” I’ll say. Here was my take on being with other SRC runners just at some local races: “FBF: Official Favorite Race” (2020’04’04’S) and “A Meeting of Like Minds II” (2020’01’25’S). The point is that it sure did make for a warm experience having them around.

The  journalist also referenced another article that ran that same day in that same NYT publication about the growth of running clubs in NYC. It seems they’re really having a day. Either that or they’re finally getting some media attention for their physical, emotional, and social benefits. We at SRC have known of them from the start back in the late 80’s; for training, for race running, and for general socializing. I don’t think we’re up to traveling internationally just to cheer on our members, but still, I sure have made some good friends through SRC and run some good races because of the association.
