• Extreme? I know you are, but what about me? •
[1¼ MIN READ]
We have our Shawmont inspirations who have gotten attention over the years (Just Gene, Professor Sandy), but a Washington Post article places the majority of us in an inspirational echelon for many other people: Americans Over 50 Are Doing Extreme Sports Their Grandparents Never Imagined.
Marathon running is on the list, but there are other extreme sports, too, including ultramarathoning, doing tri’s, dog mushing, skateboarding, free-style skiing, white-water rafting, body-building, and surfing. One featured athlete claims credit for throwing up on all 7 continents (Yes, that does sound extreme) while achieving completion of 1 marathon on each of them (Ah).
Like some of us, health concerns motivated other featured athletes to start, as did the realization that life is too short to do what everyone else is doing. One started using strength training to help him push back against the preconceptions of family and friends. Still others use endurance sports to help bring attention to worthy causes. The point is that we at SRC are in good company even outside our ranks.
I close by observing that the author makes a counterpoint of traditional retirement activities, like sitting in a golf cart or playing bridge. If you do those too, you’re double dipping. It’s time to cut back.
