Some Perspective About Quantity (#187: 2023’01’04’W)

Of Years: If you’re thinking 2022 sure did past fast it might be because you’ve acquired many years in your life. During the nation’s bicentennial year in 1976, I was a 13-year-old thinking the year 2000 was a long way off. Two thousand is now 22 years ago. As you increase numbers, the unit of measure gets smaller and smaller, relatively.

Of Miles: Some new Growlers max themselves out at the usual 3 miles we run every week. Others do The Broad Street Run regularly at 10 miles. Still others have been marathon runners and ultra marathoners. One mile for a 5K runner is 1/3 of the total effort. One mile for a 100-mile runner is 33 times less.

Of Experiences: Life has been particularly rough these last years. Every one difficult event is a big deal, but each is that much less relatively as we experience more and more. Don’t forget celebrations, too, though, which can be easy to overlook. Whether years, miles, or experiences; they all grow in number with the passage of time. Until they become something great to behold, even at the expense of one.
