• Shawmont grows on you •
[1½ MIN READ]
From the start, I didn’t want to run with Shawmont Running Club. Nothing personal, but the great appeal of running back then was the ability to step outside my front door in Abington and just take off. Running shoes from Jenkintown Running Company were a plus. But a certain SRC runner would see me passing by her house back in 2013 as I started my neighborhood loops. When I eventually met her, she invited me to join her Saturday running club with its workout mileage that suited my marathon aspirations. When I finally started getting tired of those neighborhood loops more than a year later and joined her at SRC, my goal was completing my first Philadelphia Marathon. My first run was a Shawmont-Andorra + 5-out-and-back-on-Forbidden-Drive.
Flash forward 12 years and I’ve gotten a little more consistent running with SRC: the Saturday mileage suits me (in addition to the setting and the buddies). That gal also still comes regularly. One thing that’s changed is that I’ve done a lot of my own inviting over the years. And other Abington area runners have started joining, too.
JRC has been the local draw for its own reasons, including proximity and 5K weekly distances; but when it comes to BSR-, half-marathon-, and marathon-training mileage, SRC is its own destination. So, welcome to A.A.Ron, Adelaide, Caiter, CJ3, Sylvia, Train Dave, and Yaz. Waiting on the wings with their own Philly Marathon coming up this fall are Lynette and Thaddeus. The mileage (in addition to the setting and the buddies) really gets into your bones.
