I like this quote attributed to Jimmy Fallon: “How do you know if someone ran a marathon? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you” (Zen Yanni Newsletter 12/7/24 [ShawmontRunningClub.com]). I like it because of how true it is; certainly if I’m any indication. Personally, though, I might qualify the quote by saying: “How do you know if someone’s going to run a marathon?” Yep. Me.
Across the 2 running groups I write for, Growlers Group Run (this one) and Shawmont Running Club, I don’t write about marathon running all the time — that would be pretentious — but I write about it enough. For Philadelphia Marathon 2025 (11’23’Sun!), I’ve written 6 times by my count.
Not every friend-of-runner cares that much about what they’re doing. For sure they’re not interested enough to drag themselves out of bed to cheer. Enter the marathon tracking app. Friends-of-runners-who-care-just-enough can download Philadelphia Marathon 2025’s app and look up their favorite runner. Even me. They can watch that runner make progress at the speed of cellular data.
I haven’t tried the app previously, but I used Boston Marathon 2024’s and it was pretty exciting watching that dot move toward the finish line. Seriously! Honolulu’s was a little less good (I thought one friend had collapsed, based on the failure to update.), but Philly’s tech provider should be able to offer a good experience. Registrations fees helped to pay for it!
Those of you who have been paying attention to club members who have been training (and talking) can give it a try. (Holler for name deets.)
You’ll save us all the trouble of humble bragging when we see you the following Wednesday for the usual club run with the crew.
