A Hazard of One Speed Workout (#326: 2025’10’15’W)

A different kind of ooch

[1½ MIN READ]

Philadelphia Marathon training (11’16’Sun) has a few of us Growlers doing track workouts for speed at Cheltenham School District’s Cedarbook Middle School. Thaddeus’ place has been a good place for me to park and do a mile-and-a-third warmup. The route to the school cuts through Curtis Arboretum, which is a cool place for scenery and keeps the whole run lively. Too lively.

One workout had me doing a solo warmup. As I traversed the meadow, I was shocked by a sharp pain in my back, upper left thigh. It wasn’t a muscle pull but a monster prick that had me reaching down to touch it — just as a bee-like, hornety, waspy bug wriggled away and made off from under my shorts.

Thankfully, I’m not allergic to stings, but it felt like a hot poker. I had a story to tell and a sight to show to J’Adam and Lynette when I reached the track.

And the pain didn’t go away. For hours. That’s not a normal reaction to a sting for me.

When it kept hurting like the dickens, I went to Dr. Google. It may not have been a normal reaction for me, but it was a reaction that can happen with stings. I got a nice ring-like swelling that radiated out as my body did its best to get rid of the stinger’s poison. And the pain took its time to go away. For days.

There are some positives. I got tons of sympathy from J’Adam, Lynette, and Wife. The injury wasn’t something that put off my training. And I got to blame Thaddeus for introducing me to that route. ‘Cuz it’s so much funner to blame other people for my problems.
