A certain kind of failure

[<1½ MIN READ]

Using both Strava and MapMyRun to track every week’s run is a thing for me—both apps—as is getting a nice, round number to prove my compulsiveness. So, imagine my dismay when my phone battery died on me last week, midrun.

Some people will argue running without a timing device is liberating. Sure, if that’s the primary intent. On a route with a known distance. But last week’s Backyard Route effort didn’t constitute either; intent or distance: I had no control over when the phone died relative to the time or distance for each app (Note: They do it differently!). I had done some marathon-training miles before reaching the Growlers Group Run and really did want to know what my total was, including the club effort. Well, it was not to be. Lynette had to hear my initial grousing and then my final resignation.

The only solution was to accept the imperfection. As the compulsive sort, it’s better that way. Life is full of imperfection and I’d rather learn to accept them better and sooner than not. So, 10.44 and 10.16 miles it is on each app. Another life lesson accepted.

Incidentally, I’d also just been commenting to Lynette about the realization that people like reading my interpretation of what we experienced during each previous week’s effort. So, when I wondered aloud to her what I should write about in the Cerebrun this week and she suggested about my phone dying, I accepted that suggestion. There you go, Lynette. Thanks! Last week wasn’t a total failure.
