I Am Not a Drunk (#297: 2025’02’26’W)

I have witnesses

[1½ MIN READ]

I like to laugh about GGR (About) being the drinking club with a running problem (Preserved on Glass). I’m also quick to share that my Mid-life Crisis (Rumination) comprised running, beer, and coffee; in that order. But let me make it perfectly clear: I’m not a drunk. Queue Richard Nixon’s assertion (Getty Images video) about ‘crookedness’ that still has a life of its own in popular media.

Queue also my run invitation from last week when I said I couldn’t make the usual weekly effort. It seems my candor with a resident physician at my primary-care office meant that my medical record included the distinction of me having an “alcohol dependency.” That meant my medical record—whose release I did innocently approve—got to an underwriter for long-term care insurance. That individual didn’t look very carefully at the additional details that refuted the unfortunate distinction. I missed the run so that I could meet with an attending physician to amend my medical record. He liked the term “mischaracterization” to qualify the dependency distinction and assured me the office would make the necessary amendments to my record. Hopefully the details will smooth the path to getting LTC insurance now.

The connection to GGR is manifold. I developed a taste for beer at the running club. GGR buds also know that I’m a lightweight and have even helped to make sure I was no threat to anyone after one particularly strong brew in the store post-run (designated driver, anyone?). They have witnessed and continue to witness my consumption habits regularly. More than one has even responded emphatically, “You don’t have a drinking problem,” when I’ve shared about this unfortunate underwriting debacle.

Well, let’s keep it this way, ‘cuz while I like a good drink occasionally, the whole purpose of the running has been to keep me healthy. Getting carried away with alcohol just seems like a weird counterpoint. Oh, wish me well on getting that LTC insurance.
