Kudi [sic] to OKhen and Mango Marjo for their years of dedication to the Shawmont Running Club. I don’t even know how long it’s been, but as I write more runner Profiles, I’ll start publishing their (and others’) histories with the club and then we’ll both know. I do know of the dedication to running that they carried along when they moved to Puerto Rico. In particularly, I also know of OKhen’s dedication to humor and running writing, both of which he shares regularly as a Rumination contributor.
Their dedication to SEPA is unquestionable, given that their family remains and that they’re keeping a downsized home right where they built that family. What I’m still coming to appreciate is their dedication to cold-weather running. Just a few weeks ago, there they were at the top of Forbidden Drive dressed in layers to go. Granted they were in town to work on moving to that smaller home, but run? I bow to that level of dedication when the alternative of waiting to return to warmer weather is days away.
According to Wikipedia, a snowbird is “a person who migrates from the colder northern parts of North America to warmer southern locales, typically during the winter.” But the meaning of words can change over time. It won’t take anyone long to identify examples of how contemporary slang changes the meaning of words that have otherwise long been established. So, I submit for consideration a new meaning of snowbird: A person, such as a runner, who goes to colder parts of North America with the intent of enjoying the conditions, i.e., running in cold and snow. Welcome back to town, snowbirds!
