(Acts 16-17 was my YouVersion app Bible reading for today.) ACT 17:10-11 (ESV): “The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue. Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.”
The church next to my church growing up was called Berean Baptist Church, Endwell, NY. I stepped foot in it once. Only my Bible reading helped me understand how amazing and noble, instead of strange, the name was. To an academic, at least, seeing an information seeker receive knowledge, then delve into it to obtain greater understanding; that is commendable.
My church was Northminster Presbyterian Church. What, exactly, is a minster? Why is ours the northern one? Where are all the others? Where is it mentioned in the biblical narrative? Who gave it that name in the first place?
These are, at least, the questions of a younger person. I have a much better understanding of the significance of the name, now, but it feels much more satisfying to obtain validation by seeing it in an ultimately authoritative source.
