The Growlers Doing the S5K Race (#242: 2024’01’31’W)

Habit forming

[1 MIN READ]

I’m embarrassed to admit that I haven’t always paid a lot of attention to the Jenkintown Sunset 5K race. This year, 2024, is its 32nd year and I’ve been a Jenkintown resident for 27 of those years. I don’t even know how many of those years that banner has spanned Old York Road to promote it.

In my defense, I only started running in 2012. But I did start off as a running snob and immediately focused on marathons as my competitive distance of choice. For many years, my number of marathon runs far exceeded all my other distances combined. In fact, I never ran any other distance competitively before I ran my first marathon. In other words, I thought 5K’s were too short. Wotta snob.

In 2019, I ran the JNK S5K race for the first time. In October that same year we started using it as a weekly running route. Since then, the Growlers have converged on the route as our weekly default. We’ve run the route so many times that doing the official race as a running club started feeling compulsory. So that’s what we did in 2022 and 2023. Well, registration is currently in effect for the 2024 event and here’s the call from me to register as a Growler. When you do, join the “Growlers JRC” race group. Everyone who hits me up tomorrow will get the $25 special group discount to boot
