Communities in Their Own Places (#239: 2024’01’10’W)

Those places can sometimes be pretty big

[1 MIN READ]

Last week, I took the GGR traveling team to Lloyd Hall to join Black Men Run. It’s been well over 3 years since I’ve been with that crew; still I recognized 2 of the 5 runners who also recognized me.

The last (and first) 2 times I ran with them, we did a route that took us up Lemon Hill and to Please Touch Museum. This time we passed the Art Museum going south and ran along the riverfront for 4 miles out and back. The easy point of conversation was our running stories. If there’s something runners can definitely go on about it’s how we each got started and where we currently are with it. That’s a truism wherever I’ve joined a new running group, whether Southern California, Pittsburgh, or Boathouse Row.

What’s fun about communities in their places is how those places can overlap. One of the Saturday Shawmont Running Club members who knew I’d been out with BMR texted me to ask if I’d run with a rudder bunny she knew. I didn’t get last names, but I did share the picture I took. She promptly sent me back a picture of her with that same person, a former co-worker, at this year’s Philly Distance Run. Don’t you know he’d even shared with me about running PDR, because, well, runners can definitely go on.
