Thankful for Shawmont 14-Mile Runs (#142: ZY Weekly Newsletter 11/18/23)

Does that make me strange?

[1 MIN READ]

The default distance for Shawmont Running Club is the 14-mile loop going down Forbidden Drive, then west on Main Street and the Canal Path, and finally up Shawmont Avenue to return back to the start by any number of ways. Anyone can (and many do) attend the group’s Saturday runs doing 3, 4, 5, 8, and 10 miles. I’m in the group of people who, if they’re going to run with SRC, feel compelled to complete the namesake effort.

The degrees of appeal are high. It’s familiar. It’s a relatively protected route. Some one (or ones) else is virtually certain to be doing it too. It’s challenging. And it provides a fantastic baseline long-run distance for marathon training. With just a few 2-mile increases, you’re in a sensible range for marathon running. Yes, you’ll want to increase total weekly mileage, too, and speed workouts, but you don’t even need those if your primary goal is just to finish 26.2 miles without injury.

I didn’t run Philadelphia this past 11’19’Sunday and decided not do Rehoboth Marathon in early December, but I have my own peculiar 22-mile event taking place on 12’02’S. With those few 2-mile increases, I’m ready. The extra fartleks with runners preparing for other official fall races has me even more ready.

Thank you, SRC! You’ve been good for me since 2012 and counting.
