It’s Not My Fault (#199: 2023’03’29’W)

Reassign culpability. It’s much more entertaining.

[2 MIN READ]

I strained my right calf a few months ago. Fortunately, physical therapy that I got last year for Achilles tendinopathy also works for strained calves. They’re all kind of connected: literally. After a few months of doing that exercise, that calf is closer to recovery than injury; so that means it’s time for a new injury.

I haven’t been running as frequently for a few weeks and decided to add 4 miles onto the front of last week’s GGR to compensate. Terp Adam was back for the last spring break of his final year in terrapin country (University of Maryland) and we did the back half of the Jenkintown Sunset 5K route together. He runs club track there (#48 in these 200M results) because—his claim—he’s not fast enough for the intervarsity team. He was certainly fast enough to have me going. The combo of speed and the extra mileage got my left calf straining. I slowed down after a while which kept an imminent cramp in check (which I finally mentioned), but apparently the damage was done and I’ve been limping for a while. As I recall, it was another speedy, longer Wednesday run with another particularly able Growler that got my right calf going those months ago. Fortunately, I know just the exercise to rehab it.

Of course, it would be nice to keep injury from happening in the first place, right? The way to do that would be to do the proper exercises preventively. Maybe because of left Achilles tendinopathy from last year, I had been exercising the left at the expense of the right. Maybe in recovery for that I had then been exercising the right at the expense of the left again. What?! Exercise bilaterally?! I digress.

My point is that some people are trouble: They push (or pull) you in risky ways. Avoid those people.
