A Saturday SRC runner introduced me to Mario Fraioli, The Morning Shakeout podcaster. Rudder Bunny observed that one big thing of his is community in running. Well, hey, our Growlers Group Run thing is community in running!
With one of his guests, he got into defining the terms “run crew” versus “run club” (E234). It sounded suspiciously like something that’s come up in previous Cerebruns. Run clubs are known for their competitive nature as runners compete to improve themselves and each other. Run crews are known for their communal nature that emphasizes hanging out, but with running as the binder. As my own running has developed, I’ve started leaning away from the speed and into the relationships. “It’s more about the community than the competition,” many a newbie has heard me say.
Simultaneously, WWW’s have become a much-anticipated post-run event on the third Wednesdays of every month. The communal quality has been so enticing that they’ve started overflowing into other random Wednesdays. Sure, getting faster—the “run club” aspect—is still there, but communitizing is encroaching more and more. The building of community has even reached the point of “vacationing” together for a few of us: around running!
So, maybe we’re slipping inexorably into a “run crew” identity. Is that okay? Maybe we need to make WWW’s a more frequent part of our running ritual as a test. Running and being together, then eating and drinking and being together more? This idea is going to need some digestion.
