The semester’s first Donuts and Discussion event (09’02’W) brought scores of students to accept our freebies and get to know the fellowship members as normal people, albeit ones who love Jesus. 

I hovered with one particular trio and learned a little about each member. The conversation was easy, with a number of places of overlap between us.

Two talked about church involvement as residents of Philadelphia. When the third didn’t, I asked if he considered himself Christian. Raised Baptist, he now considered himself to be agnostic. He was willing to share more as I expressed interest as nonconfrontationally as possible. 

It turns out that he’s drunk deep from the well of post-modernism (and I said so, because quickly I sensed that I could). He embraces the idea that all faiths can achieve God independently and that Jesus is a good teacher. I explained how the former is a socially satisfying way to encourage healthy coexistence, but it isn’t biblical. I explained how no less a thinker and author as C. S. Lewis defended the impossibility of the latter unless he was literally God. He seemed unconvinced.

He let me pray for him, even as I said neither of us could know how long it would take for God to answer my prayer. As he left, I expressed surprise that he would accept prayer based on his pluralistic leaning. He said in defense, “I am agnostic.”
