I wanted to hit the ground running, so I had been contacting students from last year’s ACF Athletes Bible Study and inviting them to meet me.
Noah was our ministry partner and a University staff member last year in the Athletics Department. He took leave at the end of last academic year to marry and finish his seminary studies. Sophomore student Julia would be the bridge in his stead.
Hitting the ground running was me being at the usual Bible study location on the first evening of the first day of class, 08’31’M. Contacting last year’s students was me lowering the barrier to us getting acquainted. I sat outside the meeting room and said hi to everyone who made eye contact (a practice I’ve cultivated from running) … or even tried to avoid making eye contact.

Julia showed up with her known-from-last-year buddy Anna. Other familiar students arrived to say hi.
I had to compliment one passerby’s outfit: jean shorts accented with white cowboy boots and lacy wings appearing from below her waist coat. She said her name to inform me that we had already been exchanging GroupMe messages.
She and Julia got to talking about track as I chatted with the latter about her summer conditioning. Wings wanted to walk onto the team. Various of those who had stopped by were talking about churches and bible study and camp volunteering. Wings wasn’t.

“[Wings],” I asked, “do you consider yourself to be Christian?” “I honestly don’t know,” she replied promptly. “My family is Christian, but I don’t know for me.” She checked her phone then made to go. I said as she started walking, “I will make sure to follow up this conversation.” “Okay!” came the receptive reply.
So, I will be exchanging more GroupMe messages.
