[1½ MIN READ]
I’m a New York Times subscriber. I’m a little fanatical. I read it multiple times a day for many minutes at a time. I try to share with you some of the running-related stuff that both catches my attention and fires my literary, communal imagination (note specifically this here little ruminatory feature, e.g., Broken Marathon Record).
With Philadelphia Marathon training season underway, I started developing some problems with my left knee. NYT came out with a bunch of articles about knee health. Then, in more recent days, came articles on marathon running. And like that frisbee that keeps getting larger, it hits me: It’s NY marathon season, too. That’s when I also realize, I never hear SRC-ers ever talk about NYM. Philadelphia, I understand. And Tall Dave loves Rehoboth Beach (ShawmontRunningClub.com: and next). Those make sense. Otherwise, if people are traveling, I hear about Marine Corps (Congrats to Rob!); of course, Boston; even Chicago; but not New York.
As far as bringing attention to it, NYT does its share. It manages to read my passion, even as I read it. This article just popped up that could have been inside my mind about Philly as a city: Want to Really Get to Know a City? Run a Race Through It (NYTimes.com: My gift access to you).
Well, I haven’t run NYM either, but all those Shawmont Avenue ascents make me think I’d be more than ready. (Here’s another article for perspective on verticality, i.e., bridginess: The Five-Borough Route: The Beating Heart of the New York Marathon [NYTimes.com: More gift access].) It won’t be this year (11/1), but I’ll be reading about all that-there, you-know-here, afterward. I might even share with you some.
