Pacing with Some Greats (#174: ZY Weekly Newsletter 11/30/24)

World and local

[1½ MIN READ]

Many of us SRC runners pay close attention to big marathon events and we know the range of paces that winners of those marathons produce. So, one particular video caught my attention after Eliud Kipchoge’s 2018 Berlin Marathon world record of 2:01:39. Runner’s World produced this 2019 video featuring the tumbleator treadmill: Runners Attempt Eliud Kipchoge’s World Record Marathon Pace. The video is good for a lot of laughs, but also a lot of inspiration, particularly from the various people who could do the pace some justice, among them 2016 and 2020 Canadian track Olympian Noelle Montcalm, running in street clothes like nothing (2:05 time mark). Doing some online searching on marathon running for mere mortals allowed me the privilege of seeing another track runner matching a different marathon runner’s speed IRL.

Fox 9 Minneapolis-St. Paul is able to do storytelling unique to regional outlets. This video (3:39-min view) is about marathon Olympian Dakotah Lindwurm who represented USA in Paris 2024. An 11-year-old runner provided his own inspiration for her at mile 24 of her Olympic effort: Minnesota Athlete Inspired by Young Fan at Paris Olympics. Runner’s World is able to do storytelling unique to its own audience and its piece commented about his ability to stick with her for some 400 meters, not that big an ask given his 5:05 1500-meter PR: Marathoner Dakotah Lindwurm Connects with the Boy Who Inspired Her at Olympics.

For a different effort much closer to home, here’s my own piece (1½-min read) about Sylvia’s 2024 Philadelphia Marathon: Run Report: Philadelphia Marathon. SRC folks who were doing fall marathon training got a chance to get to know her and do some long running together. During her race, I got to do my own pacing with her. We didn’t do world-record speeds and I’m past 11-years of age, but her effort was equally monumental, allowing her to exceed her goal with a time of 4:18:51, the infamous personal record of a first-time marathoner. She was great!
