Last week was a trip-around-the-sun celebration for a particular Growlers Group Run club member. Personally, I’m uncomfortable with group celebrations of birthdays because it places particular value on those who don’t mind a little attention. I’m especially uncomfortable when the birthday doesn’t fall exactly on the day of the group’s events. What about the other people in the week or month? I’m penultimately uncomfortable when a particular celebration features special contributions (cupcakes, ahem) or other comparable attention (drinks out?), instead of just a slap on the back. And I’m supremely uncomfortable with attention on individuals who hold particularly central roles within the group. I hold to the equal valuation of all members. Hence, I was quadruply uncomfortable with the celebration of this birthday, which featured all 4 points of discomfort.
On the other hand, those who don’t like excessive attention also don’t complain much when it’s on other people. And this particular birthday was only a day later than last Wednesday’s run. Also, the carrot-cake cupcakes with cream cheese frosting were super tasty (all 3!) as were the complimentary French fries and IPA that 2 club members contributed to the cause. Finally, people generally seem to think that those with particularly central roles in a group are also particularly worthy of celebration. Well, I appre… >um< the >uh< celebrant wanted me to express appreciation to the club members who deemed them significant enough. And I… >ahem< that is, he feels no need to do it again. Please take note.
