Running Juneteenth (#263: 2024’06’26’W)

In recognition

[1½ MIN READ]

The Growlers traveling team (A.A.Ron, CtCloser, Jim, and Train Dave) convened 12 hours before the usual evening run to join Black Men Run’s 7:30 a.m. 10K Juneteenth Freedom Run from Please Touch Museum. What a show of fraternity, sorority, and unity! Anything that I’ve ever said about running community was true for the hour and more that we all ran together. Some 100 people showed up to do variations of the 5-year traditional 10K and optional 5K. With multiple stops to regroup at meaningful Philly landmarks and every effort to stay above 10 min/mile, no one got left behind. We reinforced relationships with Black Men Run members we’ve already gotten to know and met members of Swagga Run Club, Black Girls Run, Run 856, West Philly Runners, and Wynnefield Track Runners. We loudly, proudly, and repeatedly cheered Juneteenth, Freedom, Unity, and Love. Srsly, our throats might have been more fatigued than our legs. There was unanimity from us traveling-team members that it was an incomparable way to celebrate the holiday.

Celebrating in community

The traveling team then joined the Growlers home team for the usual evening run at 6:30 p.m. With the heat and the collective fatigue we travelers brought, we were happy to do 3 miles out and back on the Backyard Route: no more. After the run, we trooped to Human Robot for WWW, another important event for the purposes of community, if for less respectful reasons. We closed out a fine and productive day with a collective toast: To Juneteenth. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” –Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
