When You Need Motivation (#246: 2024’02’28’W)

A running group can be all that

[1½ MIN READ]

Running with someone else might be a hassle when it comes to coordinating household schedules, but sometimes you have no choice. No choice but to run With someone? Yeah, it’s about motivation.

Registering for a racing event is great motivation for getting in condition, but sometimes it jes’ ain’t enough. I have Jersey City Marathon coming up 04’04’U and I’ve been through a few marathon-training cycles. And when a marathon-training cycle becomes a marathon training cycle, I count on my Monday rudder bunny to get me out the door. On Wednesdays, I need the Growlers Group Run. On Saturdays, it’s Shawmont Running Club. It’s gotten so that I can barely get out the door at all if I don’t have someone to run with; which is really funny given that it was hard to start committing to either running group when I first started 12 years ago, such was my contentment with solo running.

I’m not alone. Last year a load of people started with us at this corresponding time last year for motivation doing their training for Broad Street Run. I’m waiting for them to start reappearing for this year’s race. And then there’s A.A.Ron, Adelaide, Growler-expat Cait, and SRC My-Oh Maya. Among us we have 4 different, closely timed spring marathons. We’re doing long runs together in various combinations a few times a month. When we do you can’t hear the end of how much appreciation there is.

And you don’t need a race to appreciate the motivational benefit of a group run. Through the years, there have been a few Growlers that ran only 1 day a week. Jenkintown Running Company’s Wednesday-night Growlers Group Run: motivation for life.
