Trailtagging II (#153: ZY Weekly Newsletter 2/3/24)

More about SRC nicknames

[1 MIN READ]

SRC trail tags (nicknames) have come to be in a bunch of different ways.

At least one came by negotiation, e.g., OKhen. Some came by self-selection, e.g., Cookie and Meatball. By far the most common way has been by translation of initials, e.g., Kaycee (AKA KC, Kristy) and Alan Bravo. Some runners simply brought their own, e.g., Half Caff, Just Gene, and Kell Pell.

Besides the feeling of belonging to SRC, trail tags provide the benefit of anonymity since not everyone wants their full names all over the web (with increasingly good reason). With the creation of the very public SRC website, it made sense to try to keep the use of full names to a minimum. What about the whole trail-tag thing as 2 names (Just Gene) or 1 (LadyJen) on these very pages? That’s simply a matter of style and preference. The Zenster tended to contract. As an editor, this individual has been keeping tags as 2. But as with so many other practices, time will tell.

Finally, if you don’t have a trail tag yet, just wait. Consider Desi (“Another New Nickname”). You can find posts from her in this Facebook group as early 2013. Then in 2018…
