The lot of us SRC-ers showed up last Saturday to a new feature at the trail head: The Zen Yanni Memorial Bench!

Not everything in this picture is important.
It seems that Friends of Wissahickon messaged Kenny Baby after its installation on Friday, 1/26, the day before, and he messaged Teddio who pointed it out to us as we converged for the usual, Saturday morning. If it makes you happy to read a little of the back story, check out the ZY Memorial Bench page on SRC’s website.
The point is a familiar one: The passage of time can be so endless when we’re watching the clock (or calendar), but as soon as we start paying attention to the rest of life, an anticipated event has arrived. Sounds a lot like race preparation.
Here’s the caption on the dedication plaque:
In Loving Memory
John Van Allen (1947-2023)
‘Zen Yanni’ The Art of Being. Run On in Peace
The bench is an amazing monument to an amazing individual, but I especially appreciate Too Hot Tom’s words: The Shawmont Running Club will be his enduring legacy!

Thanks for letting me know about the bench. I’ll get back to VG soon, when the trail dries out a little bit.
