Every running club embraces a full expanse of runners and abilities. We may not all consider ourselves that, but all of us are distance runners (Training for Broad Street Run [#196: 2023’03’08]). Some of us are long distance runners even for distance runners. Relative to a long 5K (think track and field competition), Broad Street Run (10 miles) is really long. And ½ and full marathon distances (13.1 miles and 26.2) are out of this world.
There are such things as ultra-marathon runners, though, who routinely run more than marathon distances. Some MUCH more.
Along comes Free-Burma Pete (AKA FBPete, J’Pete) who told me about getting nervous doing the first S5K I did with him a couple of years ago. Seems he does so many much longer distances that he doesn’t know how to pace himself when running a distance as short as 3.1 miles. And when I say longer distances, I mean, like, 100…miles. 100K is only 62 miles.
For our 09’27’W Growlers Group Run, Pete celebrates his 200th circuit of the Sunset 5K route (620 miles). That sure sounds like a lot, but for someone running 100-mile races, 620 miles isn’t nearly enough. So note; that’s his 200th circuit THIS YEAR.
We’re 75% of the way through. Do you suppose he could do another 100 circuits before 12’31? I doubt it. The guy’s a little bit of a slacker.
The rest of us feel mighty slackless doing our single circuits.
