[1½ MIN READ]
After 9 years of ministry in Alaska, it’s easy to fall into a routine way of doing things. As individual members of the team, we make individual flight arrangements to and from Anchorage (before going to the Copper River Valley for the annual Wrangell Mountain Bible Conference). In previous years, I was texting the whole team my travel status. Not this year. No one even asked. It was 06’22’M when I turned off my phone’s airplane mode upon landing in Anchorage to my first text from team leader Helen: “Let me know when you’ve landed, I need 10 minutes to get over to you.” None of this is bad: It’s routine.
Anchorage is not a huge city and the mission house where we stay is extremely close. Before long we were back in the SEND North guesthouse that we always rent. There isn’t a lot to do yet — we’ll be going back to the airport twice today for the remaining team members — but things will ramp up quickly. Tomorrow I have to cut the grass, among other things, so we can host our regular backyard picnic for the local former teens. You can read my take on it from last year: Consumption and Conversation.
You should understand that routine doesn’t always mean much in God’s narrative. There will be plenty that leaves us leaning upon him for discernment, patience, compassion, courage, and every other biblical virtue, combined. The fruits of the spirit from Galatians comes to mind: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control. This is what we covet prayers for.
