Smart Guy (#175: ZY Weekly Newsletter 12/14/24)

Not who I’d like to think

[1 MIN READ]

A little conversation during a past run got Quietman Tom quipping to me, “You’re smarter than you look.” What was harsh had very little to do with the specifics of the conversation; rather, it was the way circumstances next unfolded to put that good-naturedly backhanded compliment in context.

For the second time during a run in the last year, putting my phone back in my pocket initiated a process that I could not otherwise reverse. For Strava, the first time, that process changed the interface language to French. A Google search said that shouldn’t even have been possible because the Strava language should be the same as the phone’s and there was clearly no change there.

This time putting my phone away connected me to an unfamiliar app community, introduced me to someone in it, and changed my interface language to Chinese. Opening the app in the normal English on my old phone, for comparison’s sake, was no help in changing it back. In both cases, reinstalling the apps restored everything to normal.

But the bitter reality was undeniable; while I might be smarter than I look, my pocket is even smarter.
