Being the compulsive sort that I am, round numbers have always been important. For that reason, I’m going to stop short of the end of a run or add on to it to get the final number to the nearest full mile. Go ahead, mock me.
A couple of the club veterans offered the most compelling reason not to bother. In the early days of SRC, no one had anything like GPS. The 14 miles of a Shawmont Andorra were always definitive, particularly as determined by a car odometer, the most accessible measuring tool around then. There was never any need to challenge it.
Then GPS became a thing…and Strava…and followers. And all of sudden round numbers became a thing…particularly for people like me who are vulnerable to perfectionistic tendencies. Well, I’m not the only one who needs round mileage.
During a recent different run with different runners, 2 of us in the lead realized we were going to be shy of a round 5 miles by more than a tenth. I yelled back that we were going to add on as the other runners stopped, startled. A moment later, 10 of us were all rounding up to an even 5.00. If you’re going to mock me, don’t stop…I have a few other runners to introduce you to.
