To me, community deepens through conversation. With the breadth of abilities and knowledge represented in SRC, there’s so much to gain. Not long ago, I had a chance to learn about wholesaling and new-product promotion through Teddio (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you’ll have to do your share by asking.) With OKhen back for the fall from PR, my small-business acumen got refined with a master class from him (Again, if you don’t know…). Then we both learned about employee mentoring from Jamie.
It seems that someone approached Jamie who had some house-painting experience and wanted a steadier source of income working for our SRC rudder bunny. The account of what happened when Jamie took him on left OKhen and me uncertain of this young painter’s longer-term viability. BUT, after a little gentle pressure from Jamie in the direction he needed, that painter has stuck with him. It was obvious to OKhen and me that Jamie’s mentorship was a critical element. Jamie: You are head and shoulders above the average boss and we both look up to you. Your 6’ 3” stature (to my 5’ 6” and OKhen’s 5’ 10”) is another factor. ¶Otoh, the prospect of running with Quietman Tom from the stone bridge (5 miles in) left me with this quip: We barely see eye to eye. Here, his 5’ 7” stature is a factor. When in community with him, accounting is one place for me to gain in conversation; but he is retired. Given that, political perspective is another place for gain. So, talk politics we did as we have before. And while we diverge on issues, we also converge.
The point is that Shawmont Running Club is a natural community. And community is gain when we engage each other both through our common tie—running—and through other conversational loci, like profession and other matters of confidence. We just need to engage. There’s gain no matter what the perspective.
