Running club as community? Growlers Group Run has that. Couples as community? We have that, too. Families as community? We have even had variations of that (thinking Brigid w mother Nora and Aunt Smileen, among others). As for generations, we have Mo with his grandson Tristan, granddaughter Kai, and nephew Dean. A community across 2 adjacent generations is really something. Across 3 generations is something else.
As if 3 family members wasn’t also enough, though, along came APC Summer Soaker 5K, literally (07’22’S). As a Saturday morning event, I usually miss it coming down my street because I’m doing my own weekly SRC run at Forbidden Drive in Fairmount Park. This year, I decided to forgo the usual and provide my own soaking as the race passed by my house. I took a lesson from a regular-spectator neighbor and dampened my half of the street preemptively so that those who didn’t want the soaking(?!) could see how they could pass moisture free (aside from the usual sweat, ironically). And then I cheered for the competitors in all the ways I’ve appreciated people cheering for me across the years with good humor in abundance: “It’s easier coming down than going up (the former which they were actually doing)!” “You’re making me feel guilty!” And then Tristan ran through my hose spray (he does love the water) leading cousin Kai and Pop Mo. When Mo recovered from the shock of seeing me unexpectedly, he also introduced me to another granddaughter Gia who was across the street in the dry zone.
Mo, I don’t know how you do it, but setting a successful and “moving” example of exercise for a nephew and 3 grandchildren…wow. Hats off! Or on, depending on how wet you want to be.
