Alden went to Chemistry wearing his new Arcadia Christian Fellowship shirt. The one that has 2 Timothy 1:7 on the back: For God gave us not a spirit of fearfulness; but of power and love and discipline. The one that the Chemistry professor read from to encourage Alden and his classmates. About doing Chemistry problem sets.

As a newly installed CCO volunteer at Arcadia University (Calvin’s website), I’m tasked to reach out to faculty members. This is a little different from the traditional student-oriented service the organization provides. It’s very much in line with the fact that I was an Arcadia faculty librarian for 17 years. In fact, just 3 days before that I had shared with a Chemistry professor about my new role with Arcadia Christian Fellowship. That professor.
I saw her another 2 days later and celebrated her calling out of Alden’s shirt. She had been looking out over the class from the back and saw it when she decided to read it for everyone. Was she emboldened as a Christian or was she just struck by the passage’s ostensible relevance? I don’t know, but there will be more opportunities to reach out and engage.
Share this post with someone you want to know more about ACF and its support by CCO (Calvin’s website).
And ya’know? Chemistry problem sets is not a bad application of that verse. She just conducted a bible devotional in Chemistry class. As Alden observed: …Maybe it planted some seeds.
