• More rewards of running with SRC •
[1½ MIN READ]
SRC attendance numbers have been swelling with the onset of fall racing season. Ask around and you’ll find Harrisburg (11’10’U), Philadelphia (11’24’U), Rehoboth Beach (12’07’S), and even Honolulu (12’08’U) Marathons in the mix. A bunch of Shawmont runners also do Rehoboth Beach Half Marathon every year and we’ve seen them dropping in to do long runs. There was also one other notable half-marathon: End of the Road Half Marathon in Waterfall PA (10’19’S).
It seems that a bunch of Jenkintown Running Company’s Growlers Group Run club members had set their mind to running it and needed some motivating to execute long slow distances. Enter the social fabric of the club that’s named after the one-mile Shawmont Avenue hill ascent: That’s us. (There are some who wish the hill was at the beginning of the run, but relocating it isn’t happening anytime soon.) You may have heard it said that “Distance work is speed work. Hill work is speed work. Speed work is speed work.” A Shawmont Hill effort takes care of 2/3’s of that, particularly relative to half marathons, and takes care of all of it if you’re squeezing in some intervals, tempos, or fartleks
Let’s say that the half-marathon-training work paid off in spades. Six JRC/SRC runners were in the field. They were 6 out of 6 for awards with 4 winning AG 1st-place finishes and 2 showing in 3rd place. (See Congrats-a-mundo to All for the details.) And after using SRC for long runs for a few races in the last few years, some are starting to say they’re really getting to like the hill. If that means they start making a habit out of attending, we’re all winners, hey?
