A Biblical Perspective

Ministry work requires a financial commitment. Those engaged in it have the same expenses as those engaged in secular work. The more fully they are engaged in that work, the greater their need for donors to help provide for their financial needs.

Jesus was a carpenter, but once he began his ministry proclaiming the Good News of the coming of the Kingdom, he depended upon others to provide for his financial needs (Luke 8:1-3. BibleGateway.com). Paul was a tentmaker, but he also benefitted from others who assisted with his financial needs (BibleOdyssey.org).

Deputation in Christian ministry is the practice of building a donor base. Author Alan Patterson’s article “Biblical Basis for Deputation” looks to 3 John for another defense (ProclaimAndDefend.org).

Financial is a pragmatic part of ministry support, but it is only a part.

An Institutional Perspective

Non-profit organizations do not meet their own financial needs by selling products or services. They must develop financial partnerships with individuals, organizations, and businesses. Consider public media like NPR (National Public Radio), research organizations like American Association for Cancer Research, or public-awareness organizations like American Heart Association. There are countless others, of course.

Coalition for Christian Outreach (CCO) typically partners with churches (“The Opportunity,” CCOJubilee.org) to meet the financial needs of its staff to enable them to serve college campuses. An individual church, then becomes the primary financial partner.

Some staff choose not to partner with specific churches. This means those staff members must personally recruit donors. That is the decision CCO and I have made together for me. It enables me to serve Arcadia University‘s Arcadia Christian Fellowship where I would not otherwise have a fully dedicated church partner (Arcadia.edu, iCandybyWangC.com).
